What Defines a Resilient Life? 7.22.24 RUnlimited: Weekly Resilience Unlimited Newsletter in 4 Points

Updated: Jul 23

  1. Resilient Quote. Philosopher, Hannah Arendt, “Without being bound to the fulfillment of our promises, we would never be able to keep our identities; we would be condemned to wander helplessly and without direction in the darkness of each person’s lonely heart, caught in it’s contradictions and equivocalities.”

  2. Resilience in the News: "Fostering Resilient Teams: The Art of Bouncing Back" https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexanderpuutio/2024/04/08/resilience-and-antifragility-are-the-best-strategies-for-2024/ Excellent article, although I disagree with the definition of resilience as "bouncing back" and regaining the shape as the author and many resilient experts suggest. "Bouncing back" presupposes that you have a path to bounce back to. Therefore, resilience first requires a path. Ergo, finding your best path. Lastly, how we find our best path necessitates the analysis that we will be different because of the process of finding it. As a result, change takes place, and we are actually a different shape; not the same. Please read the article, though. It's excellent.

  3. Resilient Reflection from my book, Resilience Unlimited, How to Always Find Your Best Path, found here: https://a.co/d/dExAtFe

I quote James Clear, author of Atomic Habits on the Care Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast, "The big picture is that I think your habits matter, not just because of the results that they get you, but because of the identity that they reinforce. So your habits are how you embody a particular identity." His statement can be summarized more succintly by syaing it this way: values-driven habits reinforce the identity one desires. See #1 above. It requires commitment.

4. Resilient Vocabulary Word. Identity. See below from the Oxford Dictionary. Why is it psychologically important to understand the word "identity" as sameness? Because that is what humans desire. We crave a sameness about life in identity formation. For instance, if I was a Philadelphia Phillies baseball fan, I would associate myself with the sameness of the logo, uniform, players, and achievements of the team. Sameness promotes resilience when it has a strong continuity and significance to our lives, like a marriage relationship due to commitment.
