How Many Friends Do You Need to be Resilient? 5.27.24

Updated: Aug 19

  1. Resilient Quote: "If you want to go fast in life, go alone. If you want to go far in life, go with a friend." - African Proverb

  2. Resilient News Article: This is an essential social factor for resilience. https://www.businessinsider.com/doctor-of-114-year-old-woman-shares-longevity-lessons-2024-5

  3. Resilient Point from Resilience Unlimited, How to Always Find Your Best Path: I use the research from Robert Dunbar's book, How Many Friends Does One Person Need? Dr. Dunbar is a professor from the University of London. It doesn't matter if you have a million Instagram or TikTok followers, our brains can only manage up to 150 relationships. So, what's it going to be? Who are you going to invite into your Circles of Trust? Who might be invited into your inner-circle of three to five best friends? One could be a mentor and perhaps another is an intimate partner (I.P.). What tribe(s) do you belong to? They are the people who have the same kinds of values you do? Your tribe has a greater resilient protective factor than your intimate partner relationship. Through Dunbar's work I provide concentric circles that show you how to map out relationships. This is part of the process filling out your Pathfinder Resilience Tool, the Meaning Map to close the meaning gaps in your life.

  4. Resilient Vocabulary Word: Caritas. This is a Latin term for love. It is the most significant virtue in the Christian tradition. It refers to a posture one holds toward others that embodies selflessness, compassion, and goodwill without reciprocation from others. When we think about relationships are they merely for transactional (quid pro quo--giving to get) purposes or are they transformational?
